Even a Superhero Needs a Sidekick

Book design consists of two main aspects – book cover and book layout. These are both equally important but the first thing that buyers see is the cover design which needs to not only attract them so you can make the sale, but it also needs to fit within its genre in terms of design direction, style and font selection. Fiction and non-fiction books each have their own unique set of rules. Buyers quickly identify the genres they like so it’s important to stick with what works while still developing a recognisable brand for the author.
They say you should never judge a book by its cover…. that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to book sales. When browsing bookshelves in a store, readers are first drawn to a book’s front cover. They then flip it over and read the “marketing blurb” on the rear cover. That gives you, the author and self-publisher, a brief opportunity to grab the reader’s attention and offer them compelling enough reasons to choose your book over those of an established writer. Good cover design and persuasive copywriting are crucial to a book’s success, especially for a first-time author.
Good cover design and persuasive copywriting are crucial to a book’s success, especially for a first-time author. However, these aspects are only part of the marketing mix and should not be taken in isolation.
Authors should also be prepared to build a loyal following by promoting their books through a variety of channels, including:
- Professional platform – be seen as an expert on your chosen topic
- Emailing list – a database of contacts and blogs
- Public appearances – television & radio interviews, conference speaking
- Paid advertising – social media and traditional channels like magazines and newspapers
- Promotional and training videos
- Book launches
When combining some or all of the above marketing methods with great cover design, a publication is far more likely to succeed in the competitive world of book publishing.
Every printed book needs an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). It consists of a 10 or 13-digit number that identifies a specific book, edition of a book, author and publisher. When you self-publish your book with us, we can help you get an ISBN for free. We can also obtain the number for you for a small fee. Once we have the ISBN Number, we will make you a barcode and place it on the rear cover.
An electronic book or ebook for short is a digital publication that is available for reading or downloading onto a digital device like an e-reader, handheld device or computer. There are a variety of formats, but PDF, ePub, and mobi are among the most popular.
We can create an eBook format for you and publish it to Kindle, the largest online bookstore in the world.
