Jumpstart Your Self-publishing Journey with these 5 Easy Steps
Step One – Editing your manuscript
You finally done it! You’ve finished writing your manuscript and it’s a moment to celebrate. Now what? Your next step starts at the tip of an editors pen.
Now this is where it gets hard. Who do you choose?
Depending on the type of book it is will determine which editor you will use. We definitely do not recommend giving it to just any English major, school teacher or buddy who offers to do it for free. You need a professional book editor.
An experienced book editor can be an author’s greatest ally in taking their manuscript from draft to polished. Successful authors know that professional editing is worth every cent and they don’t skimp on the details just to save a buck. Click here to find out more about editing.
Step Two – Book Cover Design & Book Layout
Now that you’ve got the editing sorted, you are ready to move onto the next step – getting a professional book designer. This is a designer who specialises in book layout and formatting. They understand all the elements that need to go into creating a successful book cover and clean layout. Each genre has different style rules and a book designer should be well versed in them.
Here we suggest that you do not go DIY or hire your Aunty’s best friend’s sister (unless they are a book designer). You have to choose your designer well because book design is not just about creating pretty pictures but it’s about selling books.
Step Three – Choosing your end product
Will you print your book or will you go digital and produce an e-book? Maybe you’ll do both?
These are very important questions and each carry with it a different set of criteria. This is actually something that you would need to discuss upfront with your book designer so that they set up your book in the right way. Printing has a different set-up process to a ePub or Kindle book. The rules differ greatly. Discuss these options with your designer.
The cost of an eBook may be a whole lot less but one must keep in mind that the whole world is not actually online. There are still people today who like tactile books that they can hold in their hand. Printing a short run of books maybe a good choice especially if you are planning a book launch.
Step Four – Choosing your Platform
Let’s discuss your digital or eBook options. Which platform will you be distributing your books through. There is Amazon, Good reads, Google, Apple and a whole host more. Your audience will determine your distribution platform. So do your research, keeping your target audience and genre in mind and read the fine print. Some platforms may only allow you to put your book on their channel exclusively for a period of 3 months.
Look at companies who offer a print-on-demand service (POD), so you can service international clients. They print as books are ordered. They don’t keep them in stock. We wouldn’t advise this route for local distribution as you will pay through the neck for shipping.
Step Five – Promotion and Marketing
This is such a vital step. We recommend that you have a platform, an arena or a stage for promoting your book. You are your best promoter and you have a sphere of influence that is unique to you. You also have people who believe in you and your success and they like to talk. So, put them to work and give them something positive to talk about. Create a buzz. We offer Author websites that is also a platform for selling books and promoting yourself as an Author.
Have your front book cover designed while your book is editing and create social media banners and start pre-selling your books. Organise your book launch and have save-the-date and invites or tickets available that include a signed copy of your book.
